Hygienist Service Rochester

Dental hygiene care to protect your teeth and gums

It’s important to visit a hygienist as well as a dentist because hygienists help to keep your gums healthy. The gums and supporting tissues are crucial to the overall health of your teeth. You should visit your hygienist twice a year. This together with a thorough oral hygiene routine at home can help keep you in the best oral health.

Gum disease remains the number one cause for tooth loss, so by working with you in caring for your gums we hope to minimise the chances of you getting gum disease.

Hygienists will also help with:

  • Preventing tooth decay
  • Removing stains on your teeth
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Giving advice about brushing your oral hygiene
  • Giving diet and lifestyle advice that can affect your oral health

Hygiene treatments available at Eastgate Dental in Rochester

Our hygienists at Eastgate Dental will typically carry out these treatments to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

  • Checking your gums for any sign of swelling, redness or bleeding which are common signs for gum disease
  • Treating the different stages of gum disease. The first stage is known as gingivitis. The gums may seem red, sore or swollen. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis which is where the gums become further infected and tooth loss may occur
  • Scaling and polishing your teeth. This is a common procedure that many hygienists will carry out. Hardened plaque is removed from your teeth which not only helps to improve the look of your teeth but prevents more plaque from forming and decay from developing
  • Removing stains from your teeth. Stains on your teeth occur naturally through the food and drink that we consume. Our hygienists offer a thorough cleaning service to remove stains from your teeth, this makes them look better and protects the health of your teeth too. At Eastgate Dental, we are pleased to also offer the latest deep cleaning treatment called Airflow. Airflow uses compressed air, water and fine powder particles to effectively remove heavy staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. Airflow is a good option to consider if you have sensitive teeth as there is no direct contact with your teeth. It also makes a good alternative option to teeth whitening too
  • Making recommendations to your lifestyle which may have an impact on your dental health. This may include tips to stop smoking, eating different foods or giving recommendations about brushing and flossing to prevent the build-up of plaque on your teeth

FAQ's about Hygienist Service

Which type of toothpaste should I use?

There are many different toothpastes available now claiming to specialise in whitening, tartar control or helping sensitive teeth. It can be confusing which to buy. Our only recommendation would be to buy one which contains fluoride as it helps to prevent tooth decay. Speak to your hygienist who can advise you more after assessing your teeth.

What can I do to make my teeth look whiter?

Teeth do get stained over time and this is primarily caused by the food and drink that we consume. If you drink a lot of tea, coffee or red wine or if you are a smoker, you may find that your teeth are more heavily stained. Your hygienist can remove these stains through a scale or polish, or you can opt for the latest cleaning technique – Airflow which is a gentle but effective way to remove stubborn stains.

Does it hurt to get a scale and polish?

Not normally, no. If you have sensitive teeth you may experience some mild discomfort and in this case, it might be better if you choose to have your teeth cleaned with Airflow which is a very gentle cleaning process.
